A gospel powerhouse is stepping into the Broadway spotlight.
Four-time Grammy Award winner Yolanda Adams is set to make her long-awaited Broadway debut in Alicia Keys’ critically acclaimed musical Hell’s Kitchen at the Shubert Theatre in New York City. The celebrated singer will take on the role of Miss Liza Jane, a part originally performed by Tony Award winner Kecia Lewis, beginning Friday, November 21.
Adams will alternate with Lewis before assuming the role full-time on December 16 for a limited engagement through January 25, 2026.
“Performing on Broadway has always been a dream of mine,” Adams shared in a statement. “Growing up a musician, Miss Liza Jane reminds me of a wonderful mentor who blessed my life immensely. Alicia Keys has crafted an amazing story that exemplifies how we are all connected in one way or another. This show feels like home!”
She continued, “The central themes – joy, pain, beauty, and tough love – are universal experiences allowing everyone to see themselves in this musical. I am beyond thrilled to step into Hell’s Kitchen with my fellow ensemble members and bring this amazing story to life.”
Alicia Keys, who created and co-wrote the musical based on her own upbringing in New York City, expressed her excitement about Adams joining the production. “I am beyond excited to welcome one of the greats across the globe, Yolanda Adams, to the Hell’s Kitchen family,” Keys said. “Her extraordinary voice and undeniable presence will bring great power, light, and emotion to the role of Miss Liza Jane. Her authenticity and heart perfectly embody the soul of this story.”
Lewis, who earned sweeping accolades — including a Tony, Grammy, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Lucille Lortel Award — for her portrayal, will play her final performance on Saturday, December 13.
A beloved figure in gospel and contemporary music, Adams has released 15 albums, including Mountain High…Valley Low, Believe, and Becoming. Her honors include 16 Stellar Gospel Music Awards, seven NAACP Image Awards, five BET Awards, three Soul Train Music Awards, and the first-ever American Music Award for Contemporary Gospel Artist.
Beyond music, Adams has left her mark in broadcasting and business. She hosted The Yolanda Adams Morning Show for over a decade, making history as the first female nationally syndicated gospel radio host. She is also an author, philanthropist, and entrepreneur — running the Voice of an Angel Foundation and recently launching her Lady Banneker line of watches.
Directed by five-time Tony nominee Michael Greif and choreographed by five-time nominee Camille A. Brown, Hell’s Kitchen features a book by Pulitzer Prize finalist Kristoffer Diaz and includes Keys’ biggest hits alongside new original songs.
The musical tells the story of 17-year-old Ali, a spirited young woman navigating her journey of self-discovery, love, and ambition amid the vibrant chaos of New York City.
The current cast also includes Amanda Reid, Jessica Vosk, Tony nominee Christopher Jackson, and Phillip Johnson Richardson, among others. Jackson will play his final performance on November 9, succeeded briefly by understudies before nine-time Grammy nominee Durrell “Tank” Babbs returns for a limited engagement through November 30.
With Yolanda Adams stepping into Hell’s Kitchen, Broadway audiences can expect a performance that blends soul, grace, and gospel glory — a powerful new chapter in the story of one of music’s most inspiring voices.
