Rapper accused of assault, battery, and negligence after allegedly striking fan during 2023 performance; attorneys call it a “pitiful attempted financial shakedown”
Las Vegas, NV — Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B is facing a civil lawsuit alleging assault, battery, and negligence following an incident during her 2023 performance at Drai’s Beachclub in Las Vegas, where she allegedly threw a microphone at a fan who had tossed a drink at her mid-performance.
Filed under the pseudonym Jane Doe, the lawsuit claims the rapper — born Belcalis Almanzar — acted inappropriately and violently during her performance of “Bodak Yellow.” The plaintiff states that Cardi B verbally encouraged fans to splash her with water due to the intense heat and was heard saying, “That s— feels good. Put that s— in my p—y,” according to video footage from the event.
However, when Doe, in what she describes as a playful and compliant act, splashed a small amount of her drink toward the stage — along with several other concertgoers — Cardi B allegedly responded by forcefully throwing her microphone at the plaintiff, striking her and causing physical pain and emotional distress.
According to the lawsuit, the incident led to embarrassment, reputational damage, and harassment, which were further aggravated when the microphone involved was later auctioned off for nearly $100,000 — an act the plaintiff says deepened her trauma.
“What has been written off as a joke by many people is actually a traumatic experience that has significantly impacted my well-being and quality of life. I am seeking justice in the hopes of holding Cardi B accountable for her misdeeds, as no celebrity is above the law.”
Cardi B’s attorney, Drew Findling, dismissed the case, calling it a “transparent and pitiful attempted financial shakedown,” adding that both the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Clark County District Attorney’s Office had previously closed the case due to insufficient evidence.
The lawsuit also names Drai’s Beachclub as a defendant, citing negligence. The plaintiff argues that the venue should have taken precautions, pointing to a previous incident involving Cardi B at the same location, where she allegedly threw a microphone at a DJ. According to the filing, the venue failed to foresee potential risks associated with allowing her to perform again.
This latest lawsuit casts a spotlight on the responsibilities of performers and venues alike, raising questions about audience interaction, celebrity accountability, and the line between performance theatrics and public safety.
As legal proceedings unfold, the incident remains a controversial moment in Cardi B’s career, with passionate reactions on both sides — some defending her reaction to an unexpected breach of personal space, others condemning the use of violence in a public setting.
